IEC 61508 is a functional safety basic standard addressing the lifecycle of safety functions and safety-related systems, consisting of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic parts. As a basic standard, IEC 61508 also provides a common basis for industry and application specific variants that have been developed, for example, for machinery (IEC 62061) and process industries (IEC 61511).

SGS Fimko and SGS-TÜV Saar are providing in co-operation the possibility for training and qualification of personnel for demanding safety planning and safety management tasks in Finland according to IEC 61508. For engineering professionals, the training supports their development, maintains their competence, and increases their value as employees. For participating companies, the training gives an opportunity to independently confirm and strengthen technical capabilities and competencies for critical tasks.

Participants passing the training and exam will be awarded with Industrial Functional Safety Professional status by SGS-TÜV Saar. Trainings under the IFSP program have been provided on a regular basis since 2014 and the program has already been completed by approximately 700 professionals. Attendance of the training modules is a prerequisite for admission to the test. The qualification is valid for three years. By attending an update workshop and passing an exam, the qualification can be extended by another three years.
