SGS is building a new laboratory focusing on the testing of respirators and masks in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki.

Facilities for the laboratory have been reserved in connection with other SGS laboratories in Helsinki, and the planning of the premises has reached the point, where most of the necessary testing equipment has been ordered and the company has started the recruiting process. In the initial stage, the laboratory will employ 5 experts. Actual testing will begin during the final quarter of the year. The operation will start step by step and it will reach the full scope at the beginning of next year. The laboratory will be equipped to test medical face masks, respirators and community face masks/coverings made of fabric.

The laboratory serves not only Finnish manufacturers, importers and authorities, but also industry in Europe and neighboring regions.

SGS already has expertise and experience in the testing of personal protective equipment in Finland, as the company acquired the business and assets of the PPE testing and certification activities of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health last year.

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health will also be involved in the design and start-up of the new laboratory and will utilize the laboratory later in its research projects.

"The fact that SGS chose Finland as a location for this laboratory is of course good news for us as a company, but it is good news for Finland as well. We believe that local testing contributes positively to the development of local industry," says Mika Richard, Managing Director of SGS Companies in Finland and Scandinavia.
