This remarkable new laboratory has one of the largest commercial EMC chambers in Northern Europe. Tuusula EMC testing laboratory caters for mainly large and heavy equipment. Opening ceremony of the new chamber was held on Wednesday August 24th in Tuusula.

“With this investment we want to ensure that technology industry in the area has a locally available service which guarantees the competitiveness in the international markets” told Mika Richardt, the Managing Director of SGS Fimko Oy. Measuring equipment and power supply of the laboratory has been designed to meet both current and future needs of Finnish industry.

“We welcome SGS’s investment warmly. It supports the product development and growth of technology industry, which is very important export sector for us”, stated Petri Peltonen, Under Secretary of State from Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment in his opening speech. Vice president Lasse Mäkelin from ABB, who addressed the audience as a representative of clientele, praised SGS for its courage to seize the project of this scale.

The new measuring room is especially designed for larger equipment: tractors, forestry machinery, industrial trucks, engines, and large industrial products. It complements existing EMC testing services of SGS Fimko Helsinki and Espoo. "Anything that fits under motorway bridge can be tested in this chamber, as long as the length does not exceed ten meters”, said EMC specialist Timo Hietala from SGS Fimko.

In addition to the chamber itself, guests were able to view Finnish electric supercar Toroidion. At this time, Toroidion was there just on display, but next time when the car visits the laboratory, it will end up being tested.

What is EMC?
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) means the ability of an electric or electronic device to function reliably in its operating environment. High quality product that is tested according to relevant standards tolerate certain amount of electromagnetic interference and it does not interfere other devices, such as radio receivers. If the device is not protected against electromagnetic interference, it may break or cause a malfunction. EMC applies to virtually all electronic devices, whether battery or mains powered.
